In ‘aus dem Orbit’, artists who have presented a solo exhibition at Galerie Kwartier Nord in Hanover's Nordstadt district over the past two years come together.

In this juxtaposition, the artists provide insights into their work: The focus is on the development process of their respective works.

How have their positions developed since the solo exhibition?

The group exhibition creates a unique space in which the processual nature of artistic creation is scrutinised and the polyphony of art is revealed.

Painting, print, photography and object will be on display.

Shame must change sides

Our society clings to a shame-ridden normality: victims of sexualised violence are still shamed, while perpetrators, accomplices and silencers rarely take responsibility; women's* and female bodies are still objectified and devalued according to ideal measurements. This pattern is deeply rooted in patriarchal structures that systematically shame women* - simply because they are women*.

The series »Es werde Licht« (‘Let there be light’) illuminates shame as an intimate feeling and shows it as a systemic tool. This observation makes it possible to make the devastating effect on the individual emotionally and associatively available to others, and at the same time creates a space to shift shame from the individual woman* to the patriarchal system.
Art becomes the key here: it scrutinises society, articulates the unspeakable and creates new spaces for feeling and understanding - for a long overdue change.

»ALLE GEGEN ALLE« – a. motto that reflects our times, but is presented in a new light here: Instead of fragmentation, we want to celebrate diversity, instead of competition, the strength of community. This exhibition is a cross-section of the Hanoverian art scene - colourful, chaotic, diverse - and a plea for the value of culture.

Why now?

Our society is becoming increasingly divided and subject to artificial competition, while we are in danger of losing important values such as co-creation, symbiosis and togetherness. A healthy society thrives on mutual support, cultural participation and value-based togetherness. But it is precisely these values that are being jeopardised: cultural funding is being cut and the arts and culture sector is facing massive cuts.

»ALLE GEGEN ALLE« shows why art is indispensable - as the foundation of a reflective and vibrant society.

the series »du sollst schön sein« (‘you should be beautiful’) is my most personal work to date. this exhibition is dedicated to it.

i circle around myself. i work on my alienation from and objectification of my physicality. i explore its origins, place the partly disgusted, in any case shameful look at myself - over dents, wrinkles, hanging skin flaps, bulging backs - in the context of the social pressure to be beautiful and to despair of it. each layer of colour of the translucent skins has worn away one of me. i paint myself. give a face to every aspect of my physicality. I give every aspect of my physicality a face. I am cruelly honest and feel how mildness, love, affection grow towards the figures that I am myself in a way. comfort. like an embrace. in the process of this processing and contextualisation, an inwardly directed, unprecedented desire to feel good and forgive arises, which is equally directed outwards as a wake-up call - with the gaze of my protagonists - in order to (once again) generate self-reflection in viewers. //

du sollst schön sein

auf uns liegt eine erdrückende last.

wir spiegeln uns überall.

sehen genau.

er

hin.

Es zwängen sich uns

unsere makel auf

und in uns hallt das versprechen

der schönheit.

nach.

wider.

zu wider.

sind wir uns ein ums andere mal.

so lange wir gesellschaft pflegen,

seit wir umeinander.

um das beste stück.

land.

leben.

buhlen.

ist es schönheit, die uns den takt vorgibt.

mama streicht mir über’s haar.

und sieht marceline an.

gut ist,

wer schön ist.

das perfekte mädchen.

das perfekte lachen,

volles haar,

glatte haut.

so scrollen wir durch

das flimmern der nacht.

und jeder mikrometer an uns

wird observiert.

korrigiert.

verurteil.

dich.

mich.

uns.

gegenseitig.

jetzt kreisen wir

um

uns.

und reißen mit.

was nicht

bei drei

mit sich

im reinen ist.

from shameless objectification to objectification - in the act of photographing, observing, judging. to realisation, waking up, being thrown back on oneself - manifested in acrylic. in the conflict between self-objectification and objectification by others, self-optimisation and objectification by others. accusation and shame.

from a frog's-eye view, the photographer points his lens at his subject. legs pass by, the flash hits the air. bikinis in yellow, pink, white flit by, the lens focuses. the camera unabashedly draws the skin of the identity-less women closer to its holder. no distance. they have no faces, these young women of mis-selection, the stage of the scene. they are mere, young, awkward, exposed bodies. unaware of themselves and the situation they have placed themselves in. Exploited by violent gazes, captured in images that force recipients to be part of male gaze themselves. no chance to change perspective or - out of shame or disgust - to remove themselves. on the contrary, the quality of the work forces us to look at it on many levels and to enjoy it.
male gaze - by andre germar

in contrast to the naked bodies: accusing faces on bodies with blemishes, dents, stripes and wrinkles. uneven. disintegrated and questioned.

what being looked at does to the individual, what sexist, social imprisonment in roles does to the body and soul, manifests itself in acrylic, making the recipient responsible for taking a stand - in front of the accusing gaze, in front of themselves. in a strangely fairytale-like way, the works do not show any expected bodies or faces or places, instead they are isolated, distorted beings. shy, frightened, full of self-doubt, they accuse and at the same time tell of the weakened and hopeful letting go of having to be beautiful, of wanting to be beautiful. looking at this work creates a tossing back and forth between judgement and consolation, accusation and forgiveness, of the other, of the self. deeply intimate, the work tells of a sick society.
du sollst schön sein – von jessika dirks
with SCHAM[LOS] andre germar and jessika dirk's work force the recipients into the roles of the objectifiers - the others and themselves. the dialectic of opposing perspectives on the female body and the self forces a discourse on the objectification of women and the abuse of power over their physicality by ‘the man’, by ‘the woman’, by themselves, by our society - as well as the tentative and demanding question of hope for improvement.
